640S Flow Meter With Self-Cleaning Port

MONTEREY, CA – February 27, 2009 – Sierra ’s industry-leading Steel-Mass™ Model 640S Immersible Thermal Mass Flow Meter is now available with a new self-cleaning purge port field proven to remove even the toughest caked-on dust deposits on the meter.

The new self-cleaning Steel-Mass™ Model 640S is designed for the most demanding industrial gas mass flow measurement applications. Constructed of heavy-duty 316 stainless steel wetted materials, the self-cleaning Model 640S is designed for very dirty flows where residue buildup can occur over time on the sensors causing reduced accuracy.

The self-cleaning Model 640S has proven its ability to overcome residue buildup in two particularly nasty applications. The first application is in the tire manufacturing industry where rubber particles in the air flow repeatedly clogged up orifice flow meters. The self cleaning 640S answered the challenge. The purge system utilizes compressed air from an external source and a uniquely designed cleaning nozzle to blast particulates away from the thermal sensing elements, all WITHOUT removing the flow meter from the pipe. A built-in check valve isolates the system from the outside environment.

The second application is at coal-fired power plants, where combustion air is pre-heated to temperatures approaching 500°F (260°C) prior to it being mixed with the pulverized coal and burned in the boiler to produce steam for electricity. The annubars used are repeatedly clogged by coal dust, leading to inefficient combustion and increased emissions. The annubars required weekly cleaning, resulting in wasted time and money. Sierra’s self-cleaning Model 640 solves this problem with high accuracy, easy installation, and low maintenance in a rugged, explosion-proof package. Instead of having to remove, clean, and reinstall annubar meters weekly, plant maintenance simply connected plant air to the purge fitting and blew down for a few minutes, with no interruption to the process.

Featuring direct gas mass flow measurement, each self-cleaning Model 640S utilizes Sierra’s patented Dry-Sense™ Technology for drift-free performance…year after year. The meter also features Sierra’s Smart Interface™ Package for field programming and meter validation and diagnostics.

The Steel-Mass™ Model 640S is hazardous area approved by CSA and CRN (Canada), FM (USA), ATEX, CE and PED (EU), IEC Ex (Australia) and Chinese Pattern Approval (China). Meter accuracy is +/ 1% of reading plus +/-0.5% of full scale with repeatability of +/- 0.2% of full scale.
